FOTOHOF / Inge-Morath-Platz 1-3 / 5020 Salzburg / Austria

In a dual showcase, the FOTOHOF is presenting new photographic works by Sissi Farassat and Erwin Polanc, both of whom primarily explore design ideas. A trait both artists have in common is their high standard of workmanship and their rigorous and consistent striving for image solutions underpinned by auratic materiality and mysterious poetry.

In his latest work entitled Mago Über Verritt (the eponymous book was recently published by FOTOHOF edition), Graz-based photographer Erwin Polanc (born in Neumarkt/Styria in 1982) takes a distinctive, idiosyncratic look at reality. The selection of photographs combines images that address the act of seeing and its perception. His photographs explore the anarchy of things and refuse any form of narration. Instead, they align into a radical sequence structured around sounding out and sensing places, traces and relationships. They document an intent to fashion and to form through photography while affording the images an autonomous space.

In her latest group of works entitled Contactprints, Vienna-based artist Sissi Farassat (born in Tehran, Iran, in 1969) explores depictions of vast landscapes (right through to cloud formations), botanical close-ups and the classic idea and conception of humankind. She composes her ‘contact prints’ generated from the individual frames of each analogue film directly in the camera, and then hand-stitches or embroiders the images. The individually finished surfaces reference the tradition of Persian carpet weaving and knotting, adding a further sensory plane to the unique pieces created in this way.
